Review: Tony Moly Backstage gel liner vs MAC Blacktrack Fluidline

As promised, I have here a really short but hopefully helpful review/ comparison of these two gel liners.
I have them both in the same shade, which is black.

This is basically a high-end brand vs Korean brand comparison. Now unto it!

Price: the biggest consideration when choosing between these two is the price. MAC is a high-end brand. This container has 3grams worth of product and costs 17euro. On the other hand, the Tony Moly one has 4grams worth of product for 5 euro including shipping AND it comes with its own built-in brush unlike MAC where you need to get a separate one.  Tony Moly

Where to buy: MAC has its own store, well here in Dublin it has. You can also get them in Brown Thomas. Tony Moly is a Korean brand, so you have to buy it online. I got mine on eBay and there are a couple of very reliable sellers out there. Draw- it depends on whether you prefer buying stuff online or in shops!

Colour: As you can see, or maybe not (just click the photo to zoom in), they're both a nice black colour. The only difference is that the Tony Moly one is a bit more glossy/ shiny, while MAC is more matte. Draw- it depends if you want a matte or glossy effect.

One dip, one swipe: What do I mean by that? The picture above has been dipped and swiped a couple of times to achieve that darkness. This is what each look like if I only dip it once, and brush it on the skin once.
Top: Tony Moly. Bottom: MAC
Not so dark now eh. In this case Draw- both came out streaky. I mean it's not one single solid black line.

Smudge: Because Tony Moly is shinier and less matte, it's more liquidy. Long story short, it smudged. Mac didn't. MAC
Left/top: Tony Moly

Waterproof: I lost the photo I took for this . But yeah, they're both waterproof!!! Once they dry, which takes about 5 minutes max, they're waterproof and can't be smudged. Draw

Long lasting: Without any setting spray or primer, both fade after 5 or 6 hours. Draw

Sooo... which do I prefer. Tony Moly Backstage. It works exactly the same as the MAC fluidline, but at a fraction of the cost.

One pot of the MAC fluidline lasted me a year, so it was worth the money. We'll see if the Tony Moly lasts that long too!

  1. ahh what a useful review! It's good to know that we can save a lot of money and get mac quality! I never tried gel Eyeliner, isn't it hard to draw your eyeliner with it?

    1. thank you! I'm glad you found it useful ^^
No it's very easy. when you brush it once, it's not dark. It looks a bit faded. That means you can control the shape and darkness by applying more until you get the look that you want!
Actually I find liquid liners sooo much harder to use (._.)
